Susan’s work as a painter/printmaker is both bold and colourful, verging occasionally on the abstract – with the ‘printmaker’ adding a staccato edge to the ‘painter’s’ marks, and vice versa. She uses printed textures to interpret surfaces such as rough stone walls, lichen on rocks or weathered boats. Susan finds inspiration for both paintings and prints in the coastal estuaries and cliffs of Pembrokeshire, sometimes taking to a boat to make her initial small studies, to be eventually enlarged and refined on a bigger scale in the studio.
The other side to her work lies in the numerous small drawings she makes during regular travels in India. It is the country of her birth, and she is always drawn to the vibrant colour and movement of everyday life in the East. At the same time, she looks on the ornamentation found on buildings, fabrics and frescoes as a rich source for printmaking, particularly in her collagraphs and linocuts.
