David has been working as a professional artist since 1988, painting mostly British wildlife – especially game, and coarse and game fish. His obsession with the underwater world was initially inspired by a boyhood passion for angling. Now, he regularly dives in British rivers, lakes, gravel pits and the seas surrounding his home in Pembrokeshire in search of his subjects.

He hopes to incorporate the sense of light and wonder that he experiences in this often unseen world into his paintings, and is continually striving towards a better understanding of the creatures that inhabit it.

In 2008, David had his first book published. Beneath the Surface contains many of his well-known paintings as well as new images and photographs especially produced for the book. In it, he describes his life both as an angler and a painter, providing insights into how he constructs and produces his paintings.

His work has featured in numerous angling publications, as well as being used on the Environment Agency’s rod licence for a number of years. In 2014, the Royal Mail published a set of postage stamps featuring his artwork highlighting sustainable and endangered marine fish in the UK.
